As we all know Raya is coming.Its either on this coming Thursday or Friday.A friend of mine told me yesterday it all depends on the moon.
I was wondering what was Hari Raya about.Till now I have no idea what it means.What a Malaysian I am.tsktsk.So I decided to be a true Malaysian(kononnya) n do some research about it.As we know the full name(?) for Hari Raya is Hari Raya Aidilfitri.In the Arabic manner its called as Eid ul-Fitr.. cool huh? While Hari Raya literally means 'Celebration Day'
Hari Raya is considered to be one of the biggest holidays in our country Malaysia.Basically many shopping malls and bazaars are filled with people.Not only muslims, but other people with different cultures due to the discounts and mega sales stickers advertised in newspapers,tv advertisements and so on.
During this festival,muslims would travel back to their hometown to visit their relatives in order to forgive each another and celebrate Hari Raya with the whole family.Its called as 'mudik'.Then they would greet one another by saying "maaf zahir dan batin" which means 'Forgive my physical and emotional(wrongdoings)' because Hari Raya Aidilfitri doesn't only mean celebration but it also means a time for to ask for forgiveness for the wrongdoings that they had done in the past but is cleansed by fasting.Now we know why they fast huh.
This celebration is the happiest day for the children because their parents or the elders would give them money.Known as 'duit raya'.(jealous.Last of all is they would celebrate this festival by lighting up fire crackers but if im not mistaken lighting up fire crackers are banned in Malaysia but we still light them up.hehe.who cares? =P
Well, for me the best part about Hari Raya are the food.Special dishes suck as ketupat,dodol and lemang would be served when relatives and friends visit one another.If you're lucky and get invited to any open houses during Raya, be sure to try them.You'll not regret it.Better yet, just knock on their doors and invite yourself in.Haha.
